This week marks one year since I started working at Socket. What a wild and wonderful year of growth it has been! There were just a dozen people when I joined and now the company has nearly tripled in size.
My journey to Socket started five years ago in 2019 when I noticed an open source funding experiment Feross was running with StandardJS and wrote about it on WP Tavern. I thought this was a bold, unorthodox approach to a difficult problem, which prompted me to follow him on Twitter to see what he would do next.
Two and a half years later, Feross founded Socket to address an important gap in the software security landscape. The mission was to protect developers from malicious code by detecting suspicious package updates in real-time and blocking supply chain attacks.
Over the next year the company started opening up some roles. At that time I was training for my first half marathon, and I was doing a lot of running and a lot of thinking. After ten years of writing for the Tavern, it was time to seek out a new challenge.
As soon as I heard about Socket, I knew it was a place I could make an impact. The world runs on open source software, and I wanted to be part of an organization that aligns with my principles and supports the vital work of OSS maintainers.
A week after I joined Socket, I found myself on a plane to Washington D.C., for a company off-site where I met some of the kindest and most brilliant people working together to make open source software safer for everyone. Since then our team has met in Tahoe, Chicago, and San Francisco, most recently to announce our $40M Series B funding round.
Over the past year we have expanded coverage for more open source ecosystems and improved our detection capabilities in support of the 1M+ developers who trust our platform to secure their code.
What’s it like working at Socket? It’s like being on a team where everyone is the kind of person you’d want to be paired with for a school group project. The company has an amazingly positive, encouraging culture, with effervescent leadership that enables rapid innovation and collaboration. If you want to be part of a small, high-performing engineering team where your contributions will have an immediate impact, come work with us. Socket is hiring!
